Should Casablanca Be on Your Travel List? My Honest Take

Short answer: yes, but for a day, not a week so go in with the right expectations.

If you're coming from Marrakech, Casablanca is a shock in the other direction. Where Marrakech is red, dense, and overwhelming, Casablanca is a modern, sprawling coastal city with Art Deco architecture, wide boulevards, and a working economy that isn't built around tourism.

It doesn't have the souks, the riads, or the same intensity. A lot of visitors find that disappointing if they haven't been told to expect it. Personally I still think it was worth the few hours away from Marrakech.

The One Thing That Justifies The Trip

The Hassan II Mosque is the reason to go.

It's one of the largest mosques in the world, built right on the Atlantic coast, and the scale of it is genuinely hard to process until you're standing in front of it with the waves breaking beside you.

But even then it’s still huge, the picture below to the right really helps to start to put this into perspective.

So even if you did nothing else in Casablanca, this alone is worth the journey from Marrakech. Non-Muslim visitors can go inside on a guided tour at set times check current times before you go, as they do change.

The tour I went on was booked via Get Your Guide where after visiting the mosque I had a hour free to spend in a shopping centre and beach. This tour cost me £24.30.

Is It Worth An Overnight Stay?

For most travellers doing a Marrakech-based trip, no.

A few hours in Casablanca , the mosque, a walk along the Corniche, maybe the Art Deco quarter, is enough to get what the city offers without needing to stay over.

It's roughly a two-and-a-half to three hour drive or a short flight from Marrakech, which makes it very doable as a day trip rather than a separate base.

Who Should Skip It

If your trip is short and photography-focused, and you're choosing between more time in the Marrakech Medina or a Casablanca day trip, I’d personal advise to go into the Atlas Mountains, the Agafay Desert for some star glazing or do an Essaouira Coastal Day Tour.

If you want to stay in Marrakech this will definitely give you far more per hour for street and documentary photography. Casablanca gives you one extraordinary building and a different, calmer atmosphere that is a valuable experience but there are better trips to take if you want better photos.

The Verdict

Worth visiting for the Hassan II Mosque alone, and worth doing as a add-on to a Marrakech trip rather than a destination in its own right.

Go expecting a modern coastal city, not an extension of the Medina, and you won't be disappointed.
